In September 2025, Acústica Austral was awarded public tender ID 608897-31-LE25, «Developing Background Data for a Wind Farm Noise Level Measurement and Recording Protocol», for Chile’s Ministry of the Environment (MMA). The aim of the study was to provide technical background data for the MMA to develop measurement protocols to determine the noise emission levels of wind farms.
To this end, the noise levels generated by wind-farm operation were recorded under different operating conditions and technical criteria were established to determine them. The work involved six (6) two-week continuous measurements —three per farm— at two operating wind farms, using Class 1 instrumentation and audio recordings, and synchronizing the noise records with hub-height wind speed for a precise correlation analysis.
Based on these data, four (4) technical analysis criteria were defined, in addition to a base case. As a result, at all six measurement points a coefficient of determination r² ≥ 0.6 was achieved for both daytime and nighttime periods, showing that the proposed criteria allow a robust assessment of wind-farm noise emission through measurements. The final report was delivered in December 2025.
